Denton County is currently going through a transition, one that has been happening for over a decade. One of the most rapidly growing areas in America, the county is also quickly becoming one of the wealthiest. This is a far cry from the sleepy suburban part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex it has traditionally been known as. However, the organization has not caught up with the times. There were only 19 members in 2023, down from 26 members in 2023. Two of those members were returning, while 17 were new. Denton’s ARB has always been small, with numbers only going above 30 in 2022.

Days with a Formal Hearing
The ARB must meet until they have dealt with every appeal on their docket. Despite the number of appeals skyrocketing, the days that the board met fell, going from 68 in 2023 to 47 in 2024. The 68 days in 2023 were the most ever recorded, while 2024’s number was the lowest since 2020. Since formal appeals are becoming the go-to form of protests, then the number of days should also increase. Every board is made up of three members, meaning there are six boards in the county, along with a single alternate.

ARB Compensation
The county’s budget for the entire board was $451,300 in 2024. The highest paid ARB members received $205 per day, the lowest $195. The median wage for a member was $200 per day. Most Texas boards have pay ranges that are much broader in nature, giving Denton County another unique trait. The budget for the review board has steadily increased, though wages have been stagnant since 2023.
